The Pittsburgh Steelers have been absolutely wrecked with injury during the 2025 training camp. Players usually get hurt around the league during this time of the year, but it seems to be happening more often in Pittsburgh than it normally does. All kinds of players are going down, from camp bodies, to depth pieces, to surefire starters. Changes might have to be made to the training regiments and/or staff for the future to make sure the injury bug doesn't plague Pittsburgh like this again.
SteelerNation.com’s Brandon Wallace reported the latest injury problems with Pittsburgh during Wednesday's training camp.
Jalen Ramsey was spotted at practice on both Tuesday and Wednesday, but he was seen with a sleeve over his leg, and he did not participate in team drills. It's unclear exactly what his injury is and when it happened, but he's at least walking. Hopefully, he can return to the practice field soon enough and go back to playing every position in the secondary like he is being asked to do.
The Steelers have high expectations of him, as they gave up star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to bring him and Jonnu Smith in. They can't afford to have him injured, as they would lose a lot of depth all over the field. It doesn't help that Smith has been on and off the field with issues of his own. They are both expected to be key pieces of their respective units to help raise the team's ceiling.
It doesn't help that Fitzpatrick has been doing well in training camp with the Miami Dolphins as he has been showcasing his ball-hawking skills that Pittsburgh thought he lost. While he is thriving in the Florida heat, the former Dolphins in Ramsey and Smith are struggling to stay healthy up north. The Steelers need to make sure their trade acquisitions stay on the field all throughout the season, as their plans may have a little too much stock in them.
Since Ramsey has been able to walk with the sleeve on his leg, it seems like he should be back after the first preseason game at the latest. Hopefully, there will be an update soon on his status, especially if it's a positive one. The fact that he missed two straight days proves that it's not just another vet day off.
Steelers' Top Rookie Also Goes Down
First-round pick Derrick Harmon also did not participate in practice on Wednesday. In a media scrum, Head Coach Mike Tomlin said that he was just banged up a bit, so he should be ok soon. It is unclear exactly when he got injured and what the issue is, as he seemed to be ok all throughout camp on Tuesday. That would also be a major blow to the Steelers if he has to miss any significant time. They need him badly as well.
As a starter and a rookie, Harmon needs all the practice reps he can get. Hopefully, we will get an update on his status soon. More importantly, hopefully he returns sooner rather than later. He was drafted to help the team dominate in the trenches, fix the run defense, and add an extra attacker for the pass rush.
Both Harmon and Ramsey were brought in to be more than just depth pieces. They are expected to make sure the defense doesn't have a monumental collapse again. The veteran defensive back can afford to miss some of training camp and preseason due to his experience, but the rookie can't. With the lack of depth on the defensive line, losing Harmon would be a brutal blow to the Steelers.
