Steelers' Quez Watkins Shares Shocking Revelation About How Opponents Are Scared Of His Talents

The Pittsburgh Steelers' wide receiver corps has been a hot topic of debate throughout the offseason, with many analysts expressing concerns about the group's potential vulnerabilities. In an effort to bolster their receiving options, the Steelers acquired former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver, Quez Watkins.

Watkins spent four seasons with the Eagles before making his way to Pittsburgh. However, following the conclusion of the 2024 preseason, he was released and did not make the initial 53-man roster. After clearing waivers, Watkins found himself back with the Steelers on their practice squad.

Even though he didn't secure a spot on the main roster, Watkins remains confident in his skills and potential. He recently joined Jeff Hathhorn on 93.7 The Fan to discuss his abilities and his unwavering self-assurance.

"A lot of guys are afraid of my speed," Watkins told 93.7 The Fan. "I just need to continue to put that pressure on guys. Everything has to be forward. Everything has to be fast for the team."

Watkins clocked an impressive 4.35-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, showcasing his speed and potential. Despite this, he was selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Over the course of his rookie contract with the Eagles, Watkins accumulated modest statistics, recording 98 receptions for 1,249 yards and six touchdowns. While he displayed flashes of his talent, his performance was often overshadowed by a crowded receiving corps, making it challenging for him to stand out.

Upon joining the Steelers, there were hopes that Watkins could make an impact and seize an opportunity in what is perceived as a less competitive wide receiver room. However, his preseason performances were inconsistent.

Over three games, he had a few notable struggles, including a muffed punt and several dropped passes. He managed just one catch for 10 yards across these games. In the preseason opener against the Houston Texans, Watkins made a few errors that may have limited his opportunities. Watkins himself is aware of these struggles and acknowledges the need for improvement.

"I feel like I’ve played well in camp," Watkins told us. "In games, ball hasn’t been finding my way."

Watkins remained confident in his performance during training camp, working hard to secure one of the final spots on the 53-man roster. However, his preseason struggles likely influenced his exclusion from the initial roster. Despite this setback, Watkins' journey in Pittsburgh is not over. The Steelers currently have five wide receivers on their roster and usually keep six, which leaves room for Watkins to make a comeback.

Watkins will have additional opportunities to showcase his skills in practice and make a case for his inclusion on the 53-man roster. Although starting on the practice squad is not ideal for him, his impressive speed remains a promising asset. The preseason did reveal some red flags, but it will be intriguing to see if Watkins can address his mistakes and earn a spot on the active roster.

Steelers' Arthur Smith Finds Himself In A Familiar Spot

The Steelers' wide receiver room continues to be a significant source of concern, with many analysts questioning the depth beyond George Pickens. The team will rely on Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, Van Jefferson, and Scotty Miller to contribute collectively.

Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith has experience managing similar wide receiver situations, having guided the Tennessee Titans to the AFC Championship game in 2019 despite having a less impressive receiving corps. This track record suggests that Steeler Nation should remain hopeful and avoid panic as the season approaches.
