T.J. Watt poised to redefine edge rusher market with potential $40M annual deal from Steelers - record-breaking deal

Contract Talks Between T.J. Watt and Steelers Show Signs of Hope:

Amidst swirling rumors and mixed reports regarding contract negotiations, optimism is emerging in the discussions between the Pittsburgh Steelers and their star edge rusher, T.J. Watt. Despite some negative sentiment, NFL insider Tom Pelissero has shed light on a potential breakthrough, suggesting that a lucrative agreement is on the horizon.

Pelissero, speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, expressed confidence that the Steelers and Watt will reach an agreement, possibly before the start of the upcoming season. He predicts that the deal will exceed $40 million annually, placing it above the contract recently secured by Myles Garrett, who reset the edge rusher market with a four-year, $160 million deal from the Cleveland Browns earlier this offseason.

“I’ve said repeatedly here and elsewhere, I believe that they will find a way, if not before training camp then before the season, to get that done,” Pelissero stated. “It is going to be north of Myles Garrett. It is going to be upwards of $40 million per year. All I would tell you Rich, it is going to be big money. I believe we are going to see a reset in the edge market again.”

Watt’s Aspirations and Market Dynamics

Recent reports indicate that Watt is aiming to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Watt’s contract could be structured over five years, allowing the financial implications to be spread out. To claim the title of the highest-paid non-quarterback, Watt would need to surpass the four-year, $161 million deal recently inked by Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase.

While the outlook appears promising, it is important to note that the road to a new contract has not been entirely smooth. CBS Sports’ Aditi Kinkhabwala recently reported on a somewhat contentious meeting between Watt and the Steelers regarding his contract. This has fueled speculation about the possibility of a trade, although sources suggest that the Steelers have no intention of parting ways with their star defender.

As the negotiations continue, the stakes remain high for both Watt and the Steelers. With the potential for a record-setting deal on the table, all eyes will be on how this situation unfolds in the coming weeks.
