Cornerback isn't at the top of the list when it comes to the Houston Texans' biggest 2025 NFL Draft needs. In fact, some people wouldn't even put it on the list at all, considering the Texans have Derek Stingley and Kamari Lassiter running things.
However, that doesn't mean they don't need depth, and that they don't need a stud nickel. Last year, their depth wasn't really that great outside of a few guys making a few plays. Of course, the safety depth was great, as rookie Calen Bullock burst onto the scene as one of the best ball hawks in the league.
But at the cornerback position, they could easily target a guy to play in the slot or be a backup, and who knows, maybe in those dime packages, they have a guy that can really play if they draft the right rookie.
They already have their eyes on a guy who will likely be a Day 3 pick, which means that's where they could be targeting the position in the draft. But, he has some good qualities that show he has the potential to be great.
The Texans just met with him this week, showing the interest that is there.
Texans visit with UCF CB Mac McWilliams
The Texans need some depth and even a guy who can play real big snaps if needed during certain personnel packages. They met with a guy who can potentially do that.
According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the Texans have visited with an underrated cornerback in UCF CB Mac McWilliams, who ran a 4.41 forty-yard dash. Now, remember, these visits don't mean that the Texans will draft the player, or even that they are targeting the player.
However, it does mean that they have a slight interest in that player. But these meetings are more to see if the player fits the culture that they have in place. It's so that they can learn more about their player on a personal side of things.
McWilliams is primarily a zone cornerback but does have some good reps on film in man coverage. In coverage last season, he was targeted 38 times and allowed just 21 catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns, per PFF. He also had an interception.
McWilliams is a very consistent player that you know what you're going to get out of. He's not going to do anything crazy, but he has a very high floor. McWilliams played over 200 snaps in the slot last season, but this season he saw over 400 on the outside. So, he is versatile.
He will surely be a name to watch on Day 2 late, or even Day 3.
