Summary
- Fans anticipate a new season of The Last of Us will match key events from the game.
- Season 2 will deviate from the game's timeline, incorporating flashbacks and important sequences.
- Some expect deviations between game and show timelines, unsure how events will ultimately unfold.
The wait is almost over as The Last of Us Season 2 will soon premiere on HBO and Max, ending the agonizing 2-year wait fans have had to endure since the Naughty Dog video game adaptation debuted to high praise in January 2023. Although viewers know that season 2 of The Last of Us looks like it will have four seasons to fit all of its daunting narrative into, its episode timeline is currently still very much kept under lock and key. However, some fans have taken the bull by the horns by trying to predict which episodes will hold key events from the game, and some look fairly spot on.
The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie, the iconic characters from the post-apocalyptic video game series of the same name. As fans saw, season one of the series did a fantastic job at covering The Last of Us game's narrative, while Season two aims to adapt the much darker and less hopeful story of The Last of Us Part 2, which introduces a five-year time jump to the series. Series creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin previously revealed that they would be including a game-changing detail when the HBO show returns, and even though season two will follow the main narrative when it comes to many of its plots and characters, its timeline will not follow the exact layout of The Last of Us Part 2,
The Last of Us Fans Predict Where Big Events From the Game Will Be In Season 2's Episodes

Over on Reddit, user yrns_s has taken to HBO's The Last of Us subreddit to post their best prediction about where key events from The Last of Us Part 2 game could fit into the HBO show's second season, with other fans of the series coming in with their best guess too. The video game sequel is over twice as long as its predecessor, and fans have had concerns about how it would pack everything from the game into season 2, but thankfully, that has been recently answered by Craig Mazin, who said that he and Neil Druckmann are "going to mess around with time the way it was in the source material," with Druckmann stating that season 2 will have "some deviations of where we place things."
As season 2 fast approaches, where guessing certainly won't be needed anymore, yrns_s thinks that episode one of HBO's The Last of Us will include Jackson Party (Lost Level) from Part 2, which sees Ellie wander around Jackson and also where the festival happens where Ellie ultimately kisses Dena. Episode 2 could be the Overlook chapter, where Owen shows Abby a small city that appears to be Jackson from the snow-capped mountain. This chapter would also include that massive horde scene that Abby deals with and, of course, the dreaded Chalet sequence. Episode 3 may include Downtown and Eastbrook Elementary, episode 4 Capitol Hill, Channel 13, The Tunnels, and The Theater. Following that are episodes 5 and 6, which might incorporate The Seraphites, The Birthday Gift, and St. Mary’s Hospital. Last but never least, HBO's The Last of Us final episode could look at the Road to the Aquarium, The Flooded City, Infiltration and Tracking Lesson. That's a lot of game content to get into only 7 episodes, but it's a really solid prediction, even if it follows the game a bit too heavily.
However, some fans don't believe that season 2 will be as clean-cut as this and will be entirely different from how it panned out in the game. One fan pointed out that due to the timeline shift, they don't see the season ending at the movie theater, and instead, they think season 2 ends with Ellie killing Nora and Abby flashbacks. Some fans even think that the scene with Joel and Abby could be pushed back to the end of season 2 of The Last of Us or even saved for season 3 and, instead, the time adjustment may include a chunk of important flashbacks that showcase more of the other characters in the series. Thankfully, there's only just over a month before season 2 releases to finally put these theories to bed once and for all.
