The Last Of Us Season 3 Is Abby's Story - So Will Ellie & Dina Actually Be In It?

The Last of Us season 3 will primarily focus on Abby, as confirmed by the show's co-creator, raising questions about Ellie and Dina's roles. Ellie and Dina were essentially the main characters in The Last of Us season 2, following Joel's death and Pedro Pascal's exit. Their pairing became one of the only aspects of the series audiences could root for, with everything else taking a harshly dark turn. The Last of Us season 2's ending revealed that the series would be revisiting a few days in the past, re-examining the events in Seattle from Abby's perspective, alarming some viewers.

The Last Of Us Season 3 Is Abby's Story - So Will Ellie & Dina Actually Be In It?

It's fair to say that TV fans, and even some who have played the game, won't be too fond of Abby for how she ruthlessly killed Joel. That said, the choice to pivot to Abby's perspective will undoubtedly be divisive, making the promise of Ellie and Dina's presence all the more critical. Especially after season 2's cliffhanger ending and the bizarre switch in perspective, TV audiences will want to know the outcome as soon as possible. Although there might be a wait, it does seem like audiences will get to see what happened, as per a press conference from May.

Why The Last Of Us Season 3 Is Focusing On Abby

Audiences Are Going To See The Last Few Days From Abby's Perspective

HBO's The Last of Us is following the story of the video games in a similar format. While season 1 was adapted solely from the original 2013 video game, The Last of Us Part II is going to be split into seasons 2, 3, and 4, breaking up the different parts of the game. Season 2 was focused on Ellie's portion, and now season 3 will show what Abby has been up to while Ellie searched through Seattle. The season 2 ending showed Abby's perspective, beginning from "Day One," which we already saw from Ellie's perspective.

The Last of Us season 2's cast added several newcomers, most of whom are part of Abby's story. We saw members of her crew from Ellie's point of view throughout season 2, but season 3 will allow us to familiarize ourselves with them, sympathizing with characters whose fates we already know. Season 2 also offered glimpses into the conflict between the W.L.F. and the Seraphites, but season 3 will delve deeper into Isaac and the cycle of violence that has led to the battle on the island, which was only briefly explored in the season 2 finale.

Ellie & Dina Are Expected To Appear In The Last Of Us Season 3 - But Not Much

Season 2's Main Characters Will Have Reduced Roles

Ellie and Dina were the main characters in The Last of Us season 2, with Dina, in particular, becoming a fan favorite. It's critical for audiences to know that their stories are not over, and though Kaitlyn Dever (Abby) is set to be season 3's lead, Bella Ramsey and Isabela Merced are confirmed to be returning to the show (via Variety). Their roles will be reduced as the series pivots away from them for a time, but they're still essential characters in the overarching narrative, and season 3 will undoubtedly make its way back to the cliffhanger confrontation.

Ellie & Dina Should Have Much Bigger Roles In The Last Of Us Season 4

Season 4 Will Circle Back Around

The Last of Us seasons 2 and 3 are showing opposite perspectives on Ellie and Abby's conflict in Seattle, setting up season 4 for a convergence. The final chapters of The Last of Us Part II are "The Farm" and "Santa Barbara," which will likely be the primary stories for the TV adaptation's final season. These aren't the longest chapters in the game, but they offer pivotal moments for Ellie, Dina, and Abby, all of whom will have a role to play in the final events of HBO's The Last of Us.
