Ice Cube famously started his diss song, “No Vaseline,” with a soundbite saying “here’s what they think about you.” He follows it up with various people giving their opinions on N.W.A. Someone needs to walk up to Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler, and show them Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine’s comments on the team’s biggest need.
Ballentine views quarterback as the biggest need the Saints have. You never want to have a need at quarterback heading into the season. With the offseason battle between Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough, the Saints aren’t viewing the position as a need. Want to know how the Saints feel about quarterback? They don’t even feel the need to add a veteran to the room.
Doubting Spencer Rattler is understandable
There are two quarterbacks in this equation, and while the Saints are high on Rattler, it’s easy to understand why others wouldn’t be. Rattler went winless in his rookie season and wasn’t drafted until Day 3.
The combination could be viewed as low production, low ceiling. The latter isn’t typically the way Rattler is described, but the draft position leaves a lasting perceptional impact.
Rattler may have went winless as a rookie, but he showed flashes of what could be. He didn’t show consistency, and that’s what must change if he earns the starting role.
Tyler Shough’s presence makes this claim disrespectful
Saying the Saints biggest need is quarterback after picking a quarterback in the top-50 of the most recent NFL draft can’t be viewed as an anything other than an indictment of Shough.
Shough was drafted in the top half of the second round. It’s not technically a first round investment, but it’s still a high investment minus the fifth year option. To say the Saints need a quarterback is essentially stating Shough won’t pan out.
It’s one thing to say that about Rattler who has NFL games under his belt, but Shough doesn’t yet. Shough was a prospect you either loved or hated in the draft cycle. Ballentine obviously wasn’t a fan. Having a question mark is fair, but calling it the biggest need is an early declaration New Orleans will be back in the quarterback hunt in a few months.
