The Walking Dead fans are in with a chance of seeing Andrew Lincoln in the flesh as he joins the cast of The Lady from the Sea.

It's Official: Andrew Lincoln Is Leaving The Walking Dead

The production, which will open at The Bridge Theatre in September, will see Lincoln as Edward, as he stars alongside Tomb Raider actress Alicia Vikander.

Other big names in the show include Conversations with Friends star Joe Alwyn, House of the Dragon actor John Macmillan and Grantchester's Gracie Oddie-James.

The production will begin previews on September 10, before officially opening on September 18, and it will run for nine weeks.

The Lady from the Sea is Henrik Ibsen’s "most radically modern portrayal" of a woman's fight for autonomy.

The synopsis reads: "Fearful she may have settled too easily for a comfortable life married to a well-off doctor, Ellida searches for a way to break the predictable routine her existence has become.

"When a lover from her past appears at their remote country house, she has to choose between the life she has now built and the one she left behind long ago."

Theatre director Simon Stone was excited about The Walking Dead star joining the cast, saying: "I’ve been a fan of Andrew since I was a teenager.

"His effortless emotional access; the ugly truth underneath his handsome, charming exterior; the vulnerability that he’s willing to let us watch, thereby transforming itself into awe-inspiring strength. Open, raw, honest: my kind of actor.”

The Rick Grimes star opened up about what drew him to the new project, saying: "I'm blaming Billie Piper for this.

"I saw Yerma and I thought it was some of the best acting and one of the finest plays I'd seen in ten years.

"And Billie is a friend of mine and I said 'Look, there's this guy [Simon Stone], I've met him, what's it like?'

"And she said 'It was one of the most profoundly terrifying things I've ever done, but you must do it'."
