It is July, and you know what that means, it's officially starting to feel like football. Detroit Lions training camp is right around the corner, and fans cannot wait for it to get going.
With camp excitement, though, also comes the harsh reality that several players will end up without a job in a very short time. There are even some 2025 signings who will fail to make the roster in their first season with the Lions.
Between a handful of veterans and even an undrafted rookie free agent signing, let's look into some candidates as camp approaches.
A few recent Lions signings look like cut candidates even before training camp begins
Raequan Williams, DT
He might be new to the Lions, but Raequan Williams is not a new name to some Lions fans who also watch Michigan State football. The former Spartan went undrafted back in 2020 and has bounced around a bit, starting with the Philadelphia Eagles who gave him his shot.
Now in Detroit, Williams finds himself having not appeared in a regular season game since 2021 with the Eagles. Buried on the depth chart, the 28-year-old faces an uphill battle.
Malik Taylor, WR
It is rare to see a player come from a school like Ferris State and make it in the NFL, but that's exactly what Malik Taylor has done to this point. The 2019 undrafted free agent continues to press on in his pro career, despite playing sparingly.
Taylor could be anywhere from WR7 down to WR11 at this point, so he has a tough road ahead.
Rock Ya-Sin, CB
The former second-round pick out of Temple has fallen pretty quickly since getting his start with the Colts back in 2019. Ya-Sin played a career-low 8 percent of snaps last year in San Francisco, and he could be anywhere from CB6 to the very bottom of the depth chart.
While he provides experience, Rock Ya-Sin very well could be off the roster in a matter of a few weeks.
Zach Horton, FB/TE
Zach Horton just oozes that Dan Campbell energy, but when reality sets in, he'll have a hard time making the final roster. An undrafted free agent this year, the former Indiana Hoosier could provide some versatility as both a full back and a tight end. But, he has quite the ladder to climb if he's going to earn a spot.
