Mike Borgonzi has been incredibly active in his first offseason as the general manager of the Tennessee Titans. Turning around this franchise will be no easy task, as the team finished with just three wins a year ago, but the former Kansas City Chiefs executive is leaving no stone unturned.
In his first season as the main decision-maker, Borgonzi has already signed a handful of expensive free agents, a slew of high-value veterans, and traded away an underwhelming piece of the defense. Despite all of these moves, Pro Football Focus still ranked the Titans as the worst team in the NFL in their post-free agency power rankings.
The reasoning for this ranking was that the Titans still have glaring weaknesses despite the amount of money they spent in free agency. They'll almost certainly draft Miami quarterback Cam Ward with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, but PFF does not believe that he is being set up to succeed with Tennessee's current roster.
Will Levis was under center for the franchise last season and was a complete disaster, so Ward should be an upgrade no matter what. However, as a rookie quarterback, it would be tough for Ward to make up for the team's long list of deficiencies. Both the Houston Texans and Washington Commanders have shown in recent years that a transformational signal-caller can change the outlook of a franchise, but that is a lot of pressure to put on a young player, and PFF isn't buying that the Titans are close to competing.
Should the Titans draft Cam Ward with the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft?
At this point, it seems that most NFL fans and analysts will assume the Titans will pick Ward with the first overall pick.
Even if he is the pick by the Titans, is he the right choice?
He does not appear to be on every team's radar. In fact, Ward was notably absent from a group of top prospects who visited the Browns earlier this month.
However, the Titans may feel desperate to upgrade the quarterback position.
The Titans currently have Will Levis as their starter and Brandon Allen as a back up. However, Titans fans would not be thrilled about another year of Levis under center.
Levis has played in 21 games over two seasons. Despite this, he barely broke 2,000 passing yards in 2024 in 12 games played. He still has two years left on his rookie contract, but he should not stop the Titans from investing in Cam Ward.
It will be interesting to see how Ward's pro day on March 24th impacts his draft stock, if at all.
