The Minnesota Vikings have made it clear that they aren't interested in signing Aaron Rodgers in free agency, and yet, they continue to get linked to the future Hall of Famer. Amid those links, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah weighed in on Rodgers' relationship with Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell.
With Minnesota losing Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones, and Nick Mullens in free agency, their need for help in the quarterback department is clear. And while they initially showed interest in Rodgers and discussed potentially signing him, for the time being, they are rolling with J.J. McCarthy as their starter under center.
"That's the outcome we want, and that's the outcome we're headed towards. At every checkpoint, whether it's been the draft process or practice until the injury or really the offseason now, he's met the bar, he's exceeded our expectations at every point," Adofo-Mensah said when asked whether McCarthy would be the Vikings Week 1 starter.
There are some concerns surrounding McCarthy, as he missed his entire rookie season with a meniscus injury. And with Rodgers and O'Connell having a relationship, bringing him to town would make sense. While Adofo-Mensah acknowledged that link, he said the team is happy with who they currently have at their disposal.
"I know (Vikings coach) Kevin (O'Connell) and him have a great relationship still, they'll still have a relationship and keep talking, but right now I'm focused on the two players that are in our room right now and my personnel process going forward," Adofo-Mensah said on Wednesday.
Minnesota is reportedly looking to add another veteran quarterback to round out their quarterback room behind McCarthy. They currently have Brett Rypien as the lone layer of depth behind McCarthy on their practice squad.
