A few weeks after giving All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson a massive contract extension, Christian Darrisaw has now become the player at the top of the list of guys who people believe the Minnesota Vikings will extend next.
Darrisaw has only been in the NFL since 2021, but the former first-round pick plays a premium position at left tackle, and he's unlikely to be cheap for the Vikings to keep around.
During his short career, he hasn't been voted to a Pro Bowl roster or selected for an All-Pro team yet, and he's missed multiple games due to injury. Could Minnesota make an attempt to extend Darrisaw in the near future in order to avoid having to pay even more in 2025 if he performs well next season?
Minnesota Vikings reportedly in "no rush" to extend Christian Darrisaw
After Minnesota was unable to work out an extension with Jefferson before the start of his fourth season, will the same be true for Darrisaw? Well, at least one person currently believes the Vikings aren't frantically attempting to extend their top left tackle before the start of the 2024 campaign.
On Monday, The Athletic's Alec Lewis shared some thoughts on Darrisaw's contract situation.
"[Vikings] general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has explained that extensions after three seasons of a rookie contract are hard to come by. The team and player must work through old money, new money and overall length.
There is no rush [with Darrisaw], like there was no rush with the Vikings in their extension for [Justin] Jefferson. However, Darrisaw is now represented by superagent Drew Rosenhaus, who has an exceptional relationship with the Vikings."
So, while Minnesota would obviously love to keep Darrisaw around for another handful of years, Lewis doesn't believe the team is in a hurry to extend the young offensive tackle right now.
If the Vikings didn't give Jefferson, the best wide receiver in the entire NFL, an extension after his third season in the league, it's hard to imagine the team will do something different for Darrisaw.
Minnesota's starting left tackle has performed well during his first three years with the team. However, Darrisaw's play hasn't been at a level high enough for the Vikings to uncharacteristically sign him to an extension before the start of the 2024 season.
