We may see this Sunday Night Football matchup again in the Super Bowl
The Houston Texans will host the Detroit Lions in prime time.
There’s an old adage in boxing that says “styles make the fight.” If that’s true on Sunday Night, the “styles” between the Texans and Lions are mirror images of one another. These clubs similarities begin with physicality on the defensive side of the ball. However, the comparisons don’t stop there. Each team sits atop their respective divisions. They’ve also each sustained major injuries to superstars. For Detroit, Aidan Hutchinson, with Houston the latest blow being dealt to Stefon Diggs. Each team has also taken on the persona of their head coach. DeMeco Ryans is as fiery on the practice field, as he is for three hours on Gameday. Dan Campbell is chiseled from that same mold. High octane. Non stop.
For Campbell, it’s a homecoming of sorts. Born in the small town of Clifton, TX (roughly 215 miles from Houston) with a population of 3,500.
For DeMeco, this marks a return to SNF. The Texans lone win vs the NFC North occurred in week two versus the Bears. So far, Houston has a 1-2 mark versus that division, having dropped road contests to Green Bay & Minnesota.
If the Texans want to win, they’ll need a strong performance from Joe Mixon. He has faced Detroit twice in his NFL career, rushing for a total of 106 yards as a member of the Bengals. Joe leads Houston this season with 609 yards, good for 12th in the league.
Mixin’s counterpart Jaymhr Gibbs is 8th in the league with 656 yards for Detroit.
If these teams have taught us anything, we can expect a grind them up, take no prisoners type of affair at NRG.
