What Happens Between Ellie & Abby In The Last Of Us

The rivalry between Ellie and Abby is key to The Last of Us season 2, and here is what happens between the two characters after the events of The Last of Us season 2, episode 2. Although Ellie was the protagonist of The Last of Us season 1, this time around she has to share the spotlight with Abby, played by Kailtyn Dever. The Last of Us season 2, episode 2 is finally here, with it fully diving into the story of The Last of Us Part IIThe Last of Us' season 2 premiere reintroduced Ellie and Joel five years after the events of season 1, with the duo having a falling out since their time in Salt Lake City. The premiere featured several original scenes that weren't present in the video game, signaling that season 2 has a few changes in store. However, episode 2 revealed that the story of The Last of Us season 2 is the same as the story of The Last of Us Part II at its core.

She Starts A Journey To Seattle

The Last of Us season 2, episode 2 ends with the death of Joel, changing the course of the HBO series forever. Early in the episode, Joel and Dina go on a scouting mission, with an army of Infected attacking Jackson while they are gone. While out, Joel and Dina come across Abby, a traveler who is being attacked by Infected. The duo saves Abby and heads back to a ski lodge to meet her friends. However, Joel doesn't know that he killed Abby's father in The Last of Us' season 1 finale, with Abby then killing Joel in revenge.

Ellie finds Joel as he is dying, with her crying over his body. The episode ends with Ellie and the other main characters from The Last of Us bringing Joel's body back to Jackson. Luckily, what happens next is already known based on The Last of Us Part II. In the game, Tommy heads out to track down Abby, with him being the first to try and get revenge. Ellie will head out not far behind him, with her and Dina making the journey to Seattle to take down the Washington Liberation Front.

Many of Abby's friends have already been introduced in The Last of Us season 2, with each one of them playing an important role in Abby's story. To Ellie, however, they are just murderers. Thus, she decides to violently unleash her vengeance on any one of them she can get her hands on. Throughout the game, Ellie kills several of Abby's friends, with her encountering them once she finally reaches Seattle. The Abby scenes in The Last of Us Part II shows who Abby's friends really were, humanizing them before their violent deaths.

Near the midpoint of The Last of Us Part II, Abby and Ellie have another encounter. Learning that Ellie is tracking them down, Abby manages to find an abandoned theater that the party is taking shelter at. She finds Ellie, Dina, Jesse, and Tommy there, with her going in guns blazing. While at the theater, she kills Jesse and shoots Tommy, causing him to lose his eye. After a violent confrontation with Ellie and Dina, she decides to spare them after learning that Dina is pregnant.

This is a shocking decision in Ellie's eyes, but Abby's change of heart is made clear in her story. While on her journey, Abby comes across a violent cult known as the Seraphites. Abby encounters two young Seraphites named Yara and Lev, with her relationship with them causing her to become an entirely different person. Abby's relationship with the kids parallels that of Ellie and Joel in the first The Last of Us story, with her sympathy for the children likely influencing her decision to spare Ellie and Dina.

She Finds Abby In California

After Abby decides to spare Ellie and Dina, the wounded party decides to go back home. Jesse's death means that they are down one man, while Dina's pregnancy and Tommy's lack of an eye means that the gang decides its best to head back to Jackson. Ellie and Dina move into a farm house together in Jackson, with them raising Dina's child. After a year time jump, however, Ellie's rage comes back. She decides to head out again and track down Abby, hoping to get revenge once and for all.

Ellie eventually tracks Abby to California, although they are in poor condition when they arrive. It turns out that Abby and Lev headed to California to look for the Fireflies, but they were captured by a group known as the Rattlers. Ellie saves Abby and Lev, but she then forces Abby to fight her. During the fight, Ellie loses two of her fingers, but she manages to get the upper hand. Ellie then relates Abby's relationship with Lev to her relationship with Joel, causing her to spare Abby's life.

Both Characters Go Their Own Way

After their final confrontation, Ellie and Abby decide to go their separate ways. Abby and Lev continue their search for the Fireflies, with them getting on a boat and heading to Catalina Island, where the Fireflies are regrouping.

Meanwhile, Ellie heads back home to Jackson. When she gets to her house, she finds that Dina has left in the time since Ellie headed to California. This is likely due to Ellie ignoring Dina's pleas to not go after Abby again. Ellie then finds herself struggling to play Joel's guitar with her injured hand, highlighting the losses that come with quests for revenge. This is where the sequel to The Last of Us ends, wrapping up Ellie's story on a somber note.
