Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach may have made the most impactful addition of any team across the league in advance of the NFL trade deadline.
By acquiring veteran playmaking wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to drop into quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ supporting cast, Veach and the Chiefs added both veteran competency to a position group that faced its share of struggles in recent years as well as a game-altering talent to one of the league’s most prolific offenses.
Following Monday night’s stellar performance by Hopkins, as a driving force behind Kansas City’s overtime victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mahomes weighed in on the impact his newest receiver is already making.
“Obviously, he had a big game this last game, but we continue to give him more and more opportunities to make plays,” Mahomes told reporters. “We move him around and let him do what he’s special at and that’s catching the football, winning one-on-one matchups and getting open in zone coverage. It’s just going to help the entire offense, not only for him, but helping other guys get open as well. Obviously, with the big game that he had this last game, I’m sure they’ll be more eyes on him this week which will in turn help other guys get open.”
Hopkins caught eight passes for 86 yards and a pair of touchdowns on Monday night, perhaps as a harbinger of what’s to come in a Chiefs uniform in the weeks and months ahead.
if nothing else, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid seems to have a plan for how to use Hopkins and he appears to be the exact kind of complementary weapon to All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce that Mahomes and the Chiefs’ passing game has lacked in recent seasons.
