After being selected with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Brock Purdy signed a modest four-year rookie deal that included a $90,660 signing bonus. Fast forward to 2025, and the 49ers quarterback now has a five-year, $265 million contract extension, featuring a $41.1 million signing bonus, more than 450 times his original signing bonus.
Despite the massive payday, Purdy's mindset hasn't changed. The quarterback remains laser-focused on improving this offseason, determined to help the 49ers rebound from last year's disappointing six-win campaign.
Many outside the organization are predicting another challenging year for the Bay Area team, which underwent significant roster turnover to accommodate Purdy's new deal. Still, the 49ers believe they've retained enough of their core to stay competitive. Alongside Purdy's extension, the team also secured new contracts for tight end George Kittle and linebacker Fred Warner.
The possibilities have made Purdy optimistic about what lies ahead.
"I'm excited," Purdy said Wednesday on NFL Network's The Insiders. "Everybody came back for Phase One of OTAs (organized team activities) and everything, and from that moment on, the energy with the young guys being here, all the, obviously, vets, there's just been this energy here where we've got to have the chip on our shoulder again.
"And we've got to go work and prove to ourselves that we're the 49ers, and we are who we are, and have that culture that's been established here, get a little bit more refined with the new faces, and free agents, and rookies that have come in.
"But I can say that it feels good here right now, and everyone's really, really excited to keep competing, and for camp, and the season to come around. We're pumped."
One of the biggest reasons for Purdy's excitement is the return of star running back Christian McCaffrey. After missing all but four games last season due to injury, McCaffrey is healthy and ready to bounce back.
"I'm so excited, Christian being back and healthy, and getting in and out of cuts, and obviously throwing to him out of the backfield and in the slot," Purdy said. "Christian's a true Swiss Army Knife. He can do it all. So, to be able to have him back healthy, and even just seeing him pour into these young guys in the locker room and our culture here, and speaking up in meetings with certain things, man, Christian is ready to roll.
"And I'm so excited to obviously have him back and play with him. But more than anything, too, just having him in the locker room, around the guys, and his wisdom and expertise on certain things, he's like no other. He's unique. So, love having Christian as a teammate and as a brother, and excited to play with him this year."
