The New York Yankees are still reportedly looking for an infielder in free agency or the trade market this winter. They watched as Gleyber Torres walked in free agency and signed a very affordable contract with the Detroit Tigers.
Brendan Duty of The Athletic recently suggested the Yankees could poach a player from the Los Angeles Dodgers to replace Torres. Duty suggested New York could sign Dodgers free agent Kike Hernández this winter. Hernández is projected to sign for around $3 million, per Spotrac.
"The Yankees were deep in talks with Hernández before he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers last year," Kuty wrote. "It's unclear whether the Yankees are interested this time around. Last season, Hernández, 33, had an 85 OPS+ in 126 games. He could be an option at second base or third base. After the Dodgers' World Series win, Hernández ripped Fat Joe's performance at Yankee Stadium just ahead of Game 3."
Hernández may not be the worst option for the Yankees. Last season, he wasn't great, but he was versatile. The veteran utility man slashed .229/.281/.373 with a 1.3 WAR and 12 home runs.
He's not going to go out and win games for the Yankees, but the Bronx Bombers don't need somebody to do that. Signing him at around $3 million would be a steal and it would improve the depth in the Bronx quite a bit.
