Yankees May Have Perfect Trade Candidate to Fish for Marlins Pitchers

New York Yankees outfield prospect Everson Pereira

Everson Pereira May Be Perfect Yankees Trade Chip for Marlins - Heavy Sports

The New York Yankees may finally be ready to part with Everson Pereira. And the Miami Marlins might be the team that benefits most from this decision.

Multiple reports, including Matthew Schmidt of Sports Illustrated, suggest the Yankees and Marlins have the pieces to formulate a trade that would send Pereira to Miami in exchange for bullpen help. It’s a classic case of “surplus meets need,” and in the Bronx, the writing might be on the wall for Pereira’s long-term future.

Pereira, 24, has long been regarded as one of the Yankees’ most electric outfield prospects, currently ranked No. 12 in their system. His abilities have always impressed, as Pereira boasts plus power, good speed, and the defensive skills to handle any of the three outfield spots.

But while Pereira’s ceiling remains tantalizing, his path to the big-league lineup is quickly disappearing, blocked by a deep cast of outfielders, both present and future.

Aaron Judge is the face of the team, and not going anywhere. Jasson Dominguez continues his comeback from Tommy John surgery and is working on his potential status as a franchise cornerstone. Trent Grisham, acquired as a complementary piece in the Juan Soto blockbuster, has proved valuable as a left-handed defensive specialist with a sneaky knack for timely hits. That hardly leaves space for Cody Bellinger, who is signed through next season.

And then there’s Spencer Jones, the 6-foot-7 slugger who’s pounding down the door at Double-A Somerset with power that’s earned him Aaron Judge-lite comparisons. He hit his 12th home run of the season this past weekend, which is tied for the lead in the Eastern League.

Despite his talent, Pereira is facing an uphill battle for a spot with the Yankees.

Pereira made his MLB debut in 2023 and showed flashes, but he struggled with consistency and health. Injuries slowed his progress last year, and though he’s regained his rhythm at Triple-A this season, the Yankees haven’t made room for him on the big-league roster.

“He’s got a lot of ability and real big-time power,” Aaron Boone told NJ Advance Media back in spring. “He moves well on the bases. I can definitely see him factoring in at some point.”

Everson Pereira Could Work in Trade for Marlins Pitchers

But with the Yankees squarely in win-now mode and Pereira buried on the depth chart, the front office appears ready to turn his potential into present value.

Meanwhile, the Marlins, languishing at the bottom of the NL East but flush with intriguing arms, has what the Yankees are missing: bullpen help. With the likely loss of Jake Cousins and current injury concerns involving Luke Weaver, New York’s bullpen could use reinforcements.

Miami has pitching options like Anthony Bender and Ronny Henriquez, and a trade involving Pereira, a controllable position player with upside, might just be the key to unlocking a bullpen boost the Yankees desperately need.
