As free agency approaches, it seems like one of Washington's major contributors will be staying put.
The Washington Commanders were aggressive during free agency last spring, bringing in several veteran players who didn't fit their rebuilding roster. New general manager Adam Peters was out to make a statement with his opening act, and reviews were mixed at first glance.
After a 12-win season and an NFC Championship game appearance, the man who helped build a Super Bowl contender with the San Francisco 49ers knew what he was doing. Now the Commanders enter Peters' second free agency period as a more attractive destination, with many of last year's signings set to hit the open market again.
One of those players, linebacker Bobby Wagner, re-signed with the Commanders on a one-year, $9.5 million deal. According to Matthew Berry from NBC Sports, based on various discussions at the NFL Scouting Combine, it appears that Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz will be staying as well.
Commanders bringing back Zach Ertz is a no-brainer after outstanding 2024
Of all the aging contributors Washington seemingly inexplicably brought in last offseason, Ertz and Wagner were the two who made the most positive impressions. They both showed they still have what it takes to compete at a high level. Their leadership in the locker room spearheaded Dan Quinn's culture shift on their road back to the national spotlight.
The longtime Seattle Seahawks linebacker was named a Pro Bowler for the 10th time in his 13-year career, also earning second-team All-Pro honors. Ertz tallied his highest marks in receptions (66) and receiving yards (654) since the 2021 season. The former second-round pick also reeled in seven touchdowns, his most since 2018.
Ertz would be ideal for Washington to bring back. Simply put, the Commanders don't have an immediate replacement on the roster.
Ben Sinnott, a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is a developmental project. Blocking specialist John Bates is set to be a free agent and could have a decent market according to reports. Washington could always address the position again in the draft, but Ertz's familiarity with Kliff Kingsbury's system and his veteran leadership make him a valuable presence to keep around.
The former Philadelphia Eagle and Arizona Cardinal faced rumors of retirement at the end of the 2024 season. He quickly put those to rest while expressing that the season in Washington had rejuvenated his joy for football.
Given his age and the Commanders' status as a Super Bowl hopeful, one has to think Ertz might as well finish out his career in D.C.
The first domino has already fallen regarding the Commanders' free agency plans with the leader of the team's defense re-upping for one more year. Washington fans should expect an announcement shortly that Ertz will be doing the same.
