Detroit Lions Defensive Star Poised for Massive $90 Million Contract in 2025

The free agency class of 2025 is slowly growing with the likes of Denver Broncos’ Garett Bolles and Kansas City Chiefs’ Trey Smith predicted to get new deals. Among those players fans should keep an eye on is Detroit Lions defensive tackle Alim McNeill.

The Lions are actively pursuing a contract extension for McNeill, as confirmed by general manager Brad Holmes. While the team has recently invested significantly in extending key offensive players, the discussions regarding the tackle’s future are still in the early stages. Holmes indicated that while there hasn’t been intense dialogue yet, both parties are aware of the desire to reach a long-term agreement.

McNeill had a standout performance last season, recording career highs with 18 solo tackles, six sacks, and 23 quarterback hits across 13 regular-season games and three playoff matches. The Lions have bolstered their defensive line with the addition of D.J. Reader and the return of Levi Onwuzurike, which should provide the defensive tackle with additional support.

Despite the potential for a new deal, McNeill is prioritizing his performance on the field. He has chosen to let his agents handle contract negotiations while he concentrates on preparing for the upcoming season. With his current contract set to expire after this season, his focus remains on team success rather than personal contract matters.

With his contract ending soon, McNeill will need a new one from Detroit or a different team interested in his services. According to an NFL analysis by Bleacher Report, the Lions star is projected to ink a new deal worth millions of dollars as a free agent next year.

Interior defenders who can plug gaps, stonewall ball-carries and pressure opposing quarterbacks will always be coveted on the open market. The 24-year-old McNeill will likely generate added interest in 2025 because many of the other top defensive tackles—like Cameron Heyward (36), Quinton Jefferson (32) and B.J. Hill (30)—are on the older side.

Of course, McNeill will need to build on what he accomplished last season and stay on the field to remain one of free agency’s top targets. He missed four games with a knee injury last season.

McNeill might not match the deals that Christian Wilkins ($27.5 million annually) and Justin Madubuike ($24.5 million) got this offseason because he doesn’t have their raw numbers. Given the growing demand for good defensive tackles, though, he might not be far behind them.

Projected Contract Value: Four Years, $90 Million’

Detroit is expected to face a significant decision regarding McNeill. As his rookie deal nears its end, the defensive tackle’s strong performance and market demand for skilled interior defenders could make him a highly sought-after player heading into free agency.

As a third-round pick from the Lions’ 2021 draft class, McNeill has established himself as a vital part of the team’s defense. His commitment to winning remains clear, with aspirations for a Super Bowl title driving his efforts as the season approaches. And if everything goes according to plan, the Lions star will be signing a new deal by the time free agency rolls next year.
