Lions urged to add veteran cut loose by the Bears

While the Detroit Lions certainly look like every bit of a contender on paper, there are still some areas the team could shore up before training camp.

Lions urged to add veteran cut loose by the Bears

One name still available who could come in and immediately offer reinforcement to the defensive line is former Chicago Bears veteran Demarcus Walker, and Bleacher Report's Moe Moton believes the fit is perfect next to Aidan Hutchinson, who is not only healthy but on his way to a big extension.

"The Lions cut Za'Darius Smith. Marcus Davenport has missed 28 games over the previous two terms. Walker would be a more reliable starter and rotational pass-rusher opposite Aidan Hutchinson, who's working his way back from a fractured tibia and fibula," wrote Moton.

Demarcus Walker is the perfect free agent flier to pair with Aidan Hutchinson

I've got to agree with Moton. Walker is already familiar with the division having played with the Bears for a couple of years.

The 30-year-old totaled 7.0 sacks over two seasons as a Bears starter. He wouldn't necessarily have the pressure on him to be a starting-caliber player opposite Hutchinson, but could do so if called upon in that role.

Between Walker and Davenport, the Lions would have at least one experienced starter to pair on the other side. With Davenport's medical worries, Walker offers some insurance. And, if both happen to be healthy, then the Lions get a bonus. Between If they have Davenport, Walker and Hutchinson all healthy, the line has a formidable trio to work with.

Based on his time in Chicago, it's safe to see Walker as a player who isn't going to be a game-wrecking force on the defensive line. But, he's also going to be good enough where you feel confident he's not going to cost the team.

This is the perfect low-risk signing Detroit can make that would immediately give fans more confidence in that line up front.

In 2022, Walker had a career year with 7.0 sacks and 10 tackles for loss and 16 quarterback hits.
