Packers need to steal Vikings' JJ McCarthy replacement before it's too late

Time is running out to add a veteran quarterback.

JJ McCarthy's season-ending injury will have a significant impact on the NFC North this season, but it could also force the Green Bay Packers to change their short-term plans.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported McCarthy will miss his entire rookie season, which hands the Vikings' QB1 job to Sam Darnold for the season. Minnesota may look for a short-term option to compete with Darnold.

That's where the Packers could come in.

Jordan Love is a star, but what happens if he misses a game or two? Sean Clifford is the current backup, but he has one career pass to his name and can't stop throwing interceptions at training camp. Seventh-round rookie Michael Pratt is closing the gap on the backup job, but is he ready for that responsibility? Pratt may need a year of development on the practice squad.

If Clifford isn't the answer, the Packers may need to search for a veteran.

Packers must sign Ryan Tannehill before the Vikings get the opportunity

Unlike a year ago, the Packers are in win-now mode. They need adequate quarterback cover in the event of a short-term injury to Love. Of course, any Super Bowl dreams go out the window if Love suffers a significant injury, but if he has to sit out a few games, a reliable veteran could help the Packers keep the win column ticking over.

Enter Ryan Tannehill.

The former Pro Bowler is still a free agent and would be the perfect veteran backup for Love. While he's entering his age-36 season and isn't the same player he was five years ago, Tannehill can cover for a few games and get the ball to the Packers' playmakers.

The sense of urgency increases following McCarthy's injury. Tannehill is the best free-agent quarterback available and could give the Vikings an upgrade on Darnold as their starter.

Tannehill may prefer to sign with a team where he could start, but Minnesota is one of the only potential destinations where that is realistic. Green Bay could sell him on the opportunity to join one of the most exciting rosters in the league with the chance to make a deep playoff run.

Beyond Tannehill, the veteran quarterback options are limited. The Packers may need to act fast before the Vikings pick up the phone.
