The Pittsburgh Steelers will likely need a new starting quarterback for the coming season, but may have already shut the door on one veteran option.
The Steelers jumped out to a strong start this season with Justin Fields at quarterback until the return of Russell Wilson, but the team faltered down the stretch. The Steelers squandered a lead in the AFC North, losing their final four games of the regular season before being bounced from the playoffs by the Baltimore Ravens in the wild-card round.
Wilson's future in Pittsburgh remains unclear, with some floating New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers as a potential replacement.
But the Steelers have made a firm decision on Rodgers for 2025, a team insider revealed this week.
"I can tell you that it won't be Aaron Rodgers," said reporter Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in an appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show" this week. "They have no interest in doing that."
The team has not committed to bringing Wilson back for another season. Steelers signed former Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson this week, with head coach Mike Tomlin reiterating that the team doesn't have any quarterback returning in 2025.
“We don’t have a quarterback under contract,” Tomlin said. “We are certainly open to considering those guys, but we have a lot of work ahead of us.”
Rodgers has not yet said what he plans to do next season, saying his fate with the Jets will rest with the team's next head coach and general manager.
